UTMB Custom House Laboratory Renovations

Owner
University of Texas Medical Branch

Location
Galveston, Texas

In 2008, Hurricane Ike devastated the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) campus.  The Custom House, built as an immigration station in 1933, was used by UTMB as laboratories and offices, but the third floor sat unused and mothballed after the hurricane.  We renovated the third floor into BSL-2 laboratory space for public-private incubators while retaining the historic fabric of the original building.
